From the Big Four to Bigger Ambitions: Antonio’s TripleTen Story

There is no one way to work in tech. The jobs you can find go far beyond coding, and there are companies out there other than Google, Meta, and Apple. In fact, you can even bring tech skills to a family business.

Three years ago, that’s exactly what Antonio realized. Here’s how he left a giant company, gained new skills with TripleTen, and discovered new aspirations.

Starting out on the “right” path

Antonio’s professional story starts out by hitting each of the beats we expect in narratives about career success. From his native Mexico, he enrolled in an Ivy League college, where he studied economics. He spent his summers in prestigious internships at Deloitte. When he graduated, instead of returning to the big accounting firm he knew, he instead opted to go to its competitor, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

His career at the accounting goliath was assured. He would start out as an associate and climb the organization rung-by-rung. The thing is, just as he was passing the half-year mark at PwC, the pandemic hit and family issues arose. He needed to leave the firm. 

He was out of a job. And because he was out of a job, his visa status was going to change. He returned to Mexico.

For some people, that would already be a major blow. But for Antonio, there was more in store. He shattered his foot. “It was a very bad fracture. I was basically bedridden for a year,” he said.

Undaunted and unstoppable

Instead of feeling bad for himself, he decided to expand his skills. A friend of his had gone through a bootcamp, and he inspired Antonio to do the same. He started researching different options, and TripleTen came up. “I read the reviews and testimonials saying how people would, in a matter of months, change their technical skills, update or upgrade their technical skills, expand on them, and land jobs that are very, very relevant in today's age.”

And the price was also a selling point.

I came across TripleTen reviews and saw that it was a great program, especially for the money, which was a big factor that came into play when I made my decision. I mean, it was great value for money. Antonio, TripleTen grad

But he was thorough. He wanted to make sure the bootcamp he chose was right for him. “After making a pros and cons list of maybe five to 10 bootcamps, I decided that TripleTen was a good fit for me, and I was a good fit for it as well.”

He joined what was, at the time, our Data Analysis bootcamp. Since then, though, the course has developed, and it is now the Business Intelligence Analytics program.

Initially, the material was intimidating. “The first month was definitely the most challenging. Getting involved with a programming language that you're not familiar with, you're flabbergasted and you don't know what the heck is going on.”

But two things saw him through: the baked-in support and the tutors. He appreciated the quick help from the support team. “There’s a little bubble that you can press on the platform, and they can help you solve minor details with your code.” 

If he needed some more in-depth explanation, the tutors came in.

When the bootcamp was wrapping up, he had confidence in his data skills. “The first data set that I did at TripleTen, I was completely frozen by it. I didn't even know how to start or how to tackle it. But then by the last problem set, I had a really good sense of how to do it from start to finish just by looking at the data itself and looking at the questions that TripleTen wanted you to solve.”

Fueling his ambitions with new skills

In fact, reflecting on it, he said, “Right now, if you give me any data analysis related problems or a dataset, I can instantly build a pathway for how I'm going to actually solve it.”

And this has been vital in his new role. He’s now the production manager at his family’s plastic injection manufacturing company, where he’s using the skills he learned at TripleTen every day. “We have probably about 100 to 200 different Excel sheets. Antonio before TripleTen would have been a bit overwhelmed or a bit afraid to mess with those spreadsheets. But now, it's a piece of cake.”

He’s one of the key people at his company, and it’s a challenge he enjoys. He can see how the whole business works, as opposed to being just one worker among a sea of others. “Being an employee at a huge company with hundreds of thousands of people, you're just a cog in the machine. But in this case, I am the machine.”

It’s a path he’s eager to pursue. Going step-by-step in a giant organization no longer appeals to him. Now, he wants to take this experience and expand on it. “Plans for the future? I want to open more businesses—as many businesses as I'm able to.”
