One of the most challenging things about enrolling in a professional bootcamp isn’t the course material, the commitment juggling, or even the scheduling struggles. It’s being able to maintain motivation throughout the program and see things through to graduation.

That’s why every TripleTen student gets paired with a learning coach before they begin. These supportive experts have one very important job — to help students stay engaged, so that whatever life throws their way, they can manage without deprioritizing their tech career goals.

Here’s a closer look at how our learning coaches fuel student success.

What are learning coaches, anyway?

Learning coaches are TripleTen program experts dedicated to supporting students from before their course starts through to graduation. Examples of their day-to-day duties include: orienting new students, answering questions, setting goals, and providing a listening ear when stress hits.

“From the moment a student joins TripleTen, their learning coach becomes their biggest supporter and advocate for success,” said Anna Klemysheva, QA Learning Coaches Lead. “We accompany them throughout their journey and are the first person they ask when they have a question.”

Learning coaches are one of many members of a student’s support team at TripleTen, which also includes:

  • Tutorsworking professionalsMeet the TripleTen Tutors: Ulyana Yeryksonava who guide students’ skill and career development. Their contributions include holding office hours for homework help, teaching collaboration and other real-world professional skills, hosting live learning events, and more.
  • Career coaches — recruiting professionals who help with students’ job searches. Their contributions include providing feedback on students’ professional profiles (e.g. GitHub), preparing a job search strategy in association with students, and conducting mock interviews.
  • Code reviewers — technical experts who provide two-way feedback (that is, line-by-line) on students’ code, just like in the tech field. Receiving detailed feedback strengthens coding skills and helps students get comfortable with peer code reviews.
  • Placement coordinators — seasoned career specialists who help students carry out their job strategies effectively. They offer regular check-ins to make sure graduates are on the right track and help connect them to hiring companies.

In more detail: what a learning coach does

Each day brings learning coaches new opportunities to support our students. Regardless of the task at hand, their efforts typically fall into one of three buckets — goals, motivation, and accountability. Here are concrete examples that illustrate their impact on student success.

Ensure a comfortable study environment

From getting up to speed with using the TripleTen platform, to setting up a study schedule, to guiding work sprints, learning coaches are enthusiastic allies throughout a student’s bootcamp experience. This also includes training on time managementThe 6 Most Common Concerns About Tech Bootcamps and online learning skills.

“Scheduling is a common need,” said Anna. “Most of our students are juggling work, and many have families, so we find ways to add studying into their calendar. And if they find themselves struggling with mood along the way, we’re here to give them a motivational boost.”

Provide continuous, reliable support

“We regularly cheer students on and check in on their progress,” said Anna. “We use text messages, phone calls, Zoom meetings, even the occasional email. If a student has an urgent request outside working hours, they can also contact the support team, which is available 24/7.”

A steady stream of communication with learning coaches equips students with an accountability partner who is familiar with their goals and helps them stay on track to meet milestones. Having this trusted channel is also useful if a student ends up needing an extension or a breakYes, Our Bootcamp Is Flexible. Here’s Why That Matters for Students..

Connect students with the right resources

When questions about billing, coding projects, or externshipsWant to Really Learn Tech? Get Hands-On Experience come up, learning coaches are the first person to ask. They know who to connect students with and can even help coordinate a call or meeting — for example, with the careers team, support team, or even payments team.

“We want to help students perform better,” said Anna. “Learning coaches exist to show you things like how to book a session with an expert tutor, what TripleTen’s expectations are, and remind you why you enrolled in the first place when you feel like studying right now is too hard.”

How this helps TripleTen students

In addition to practicalities like developing sustainable time management and online learning skills, learning coaches proactively check in with students to see how they’re doing. Centering emotional wellbeing throughout the program offers the following benefits for our students.

Validation in moments of self-doubt

With the majority (80%) of our students having no background in tech, we understand that diving into unfamiliar subject matter can be overwhelming. Learning coaches proactively check in to see how students are doing, celebrate wins, and advise if imposter syndromeHow to Tackle Imposter Syndrome at Every Stage of Your Career strikes.

Learning coaches are someone on the other side telling you that you’re on the right track, that your setbacks are normal, that you’re doing great. Anna Klemysheva, Learning Coaches Lead, TripleTen

Full utilization of bootcamp resources

Working while attending a professional bootcamp is hard enough. Add in caregiving duties or competing priorities and time has a funny way of running out. As experts on getting the most from TripleTen, learning coaches help students become savvy usersWant to Really Learn Tech? Get Hands-On Experience faster than going it alone.

“A lot of people buy a monthly subscription for a gym and never go,” said Anna, “or if they do, don’t achieve their goals. Learning coaches help prevent something similar from happening with a student’s bootcamp enrollment, so they engage with the program, graduate, and get hired.”

A sounding board for hard decisions

When the unexpected arises and students feel like they need more time with their program commitments, learning coaches are here to talk through the options and figure out the best path forward. After all, an adaptable schedule makes true content mastery more likely to happen.

Sometimes, students have a lot going on in their life. We help them stop, breathe, and reflect on their feelings, so they can take the best next step. Anna Klemysheva, Learning Coaches Lead, TripleTen
