A Producer Switches to Tech to Find Time for Life: AC Slamet’s TripleTen Story

AC Slamet used to work holidays. He was a producer for unscripted TV, so instead of attending the parties his family and friends were throwing, he had to be on set. See, the shows’ stars were also hosting events — and these ones needed to be filmed.

That was just one of the ways the entertainment industry was burning him out, and he’d had enough. Here’s how he reclaimed his life by switching to tech.

Shooting schedules

For TV shows like the ones AC worked on, shooting can last as long as 12 and a half hours. And that doesn’t include setting things up or taking them down. “A normal shoot day for producers would be 15 hours,” AC says. “The toll it took on me health-wise — it can be a very stressful job and obviously physically taxing because of the long hours.”

Then a project came along. It was about the future of food and the impact technology is going to have. AC found himself intrigued. “During my research on that show, I just got fascinated by tech.” 

Because of that, he started looking at the tech jobs available and saw that many of them involved data.

In addition, he met his partner and the relationship kept getting deeper and deeper. “We started talking about possibly having a family, having children.” 

But when he looked at his fellow producers, he noticed that some of them would go months at a time without seeing their kids. “I needed something that would enable me to be home more.”

The confluence decided him. He was going to pursue a career in tech.

Pursuing data

“I found TripleTen online — I saw a lot of good reviews. It offered things like tutors that will help you, interview coaching for when you’re applying for jobs, and there was also a job guarantee. That all sounded very appealing.”

In April 2022, he wrapped a show. Instead of looking for his next producing job, he immediately joined the TripleTen Data Analytics program. It was designed to be part-time, but AC decided to focus all his energy on it. “I knew that I needed that extra time,” he says.

It was a challenge for him. “There were times I would submit my project right at the last minute,” he says. He stuck with it, though.

Near the end of his journey with TripleTen, he joined an externship offered by the bootcamp, and this let him get real-world experience working with data. A company gave him and a team of his fellow students data to clean, analyze, and visualize. Then, AC and his team presented their work to a representative from the company. 

That experience was invaluable. It was a taste into what real-life data analytics is.

Getting the job

“That was already great experience to put on my resume,” he continues. But in addition to that, TripleTen helped him with its career prep course. It refreshed his skills in networking and using LinkedIn and showed him how to craft a GitHub portfolio. 

I think it did a really good job in prepping me for the job search and then eventually the interview process.

It must have — in January 2023, only three months after finishing the program, he landed his current job. Now he’s a data analyst at an ad agency, where he is using his expertise in data to help the company’s clients make better marketing decisions.

But for him, the best part of the job is its work-life balance. “Gosh, it’s a stark difference. I work eight hours every day, Monday to Friday. I have my weekends off, which is amazing.”

He can help his partner take care of their dogs. He even has time for laundry. “It’s a breath of fresh air.”

And no, he doesn’t work holidays anymore.
